Spiritual Education
God-Centered Knowledge
Knowledge without knowing God is incomplete. Parental guidance plays an essential role in the spiritual maturation of children. Parents are challenged to help each child recognize and sharpen his or her particular abilities, and use them to God’s glory. The rearing of children often must be as unique and diverse as the children God has given us.
Paideia focuses not only on the academic training of a child but assists parents in this individual training of the heart.
Spiritual Education Includes:
- Reading the weekly Bible assignment
- Window of the World
- Reciting the weekly Bible verse
- Ability to apply growing Bible knowledge to real-life needs
- Increasing in awareness of the needs of others and helping intuitively
- Seeking help or asking for an explanation of difficult concepts from others – humility to learn from all
- Honoring the time and property of others
The 14 Ideas
Twentieth century educator and philosopher Mortimer Adler identified over one hundred key ideas that form the core of philosophical thought in western civilization. These “great ideas” show up in literature, politics, religion, the arts, education, health, and business, and undergird our ability to communicate common values in public discourse. These ideas form a springboard of commonality for people of differing backgrounds to be able to work together to achieve culture-wide goals.
In the Paideia Classical School we have narrowed the field to 14 key ideas that span all of our levels and all subjects. Though classified by Adler, the fourteen we’ve chosen fundamentally describe the nature of God, and therefore represent ideas we want our students to be able to recognize and use to build their own worldview. These “14 Ideas” form the foundation for every lesson, formal or informal.
